If you have ever wanted to try your hand at painting a model from life, this is the workshop for you. You will start with gesture painting and work into longer poses. The model will be in strong light, creating a series of tonal shapes that will vary with short or long poses. You’ll learn how to get proportions correct, and how to train your eye to see tonal shapes instead of linear outlines.

Plein Air Painting Essentials
Sept 21, 22, 23
Bear Valley (just outside of Lumby BC)*
Contact: Barbara Fresz
This three day course will focus on introducing painters to the basic skills that are key to producing successful field studies. Leaning to design from what is in front of you, simplifying and developing a process for recording the most changeable elements quickly and accurately, and completing the painting in one sitting is where the focus of the course will lie. Finding correct tonal and color relationships will teach students to create the effects of atmopsphere and distance.
Instruction will consist of a morning demo, and then one on one coaching as the painting day progresses. Students will be encouraged to paint smaller paintings and more of them, so that they can be completed before the light and other elements change drastically.
Plein air painting is hugely valuable in terms of skill building for the developing painter; in addition it is challenging, stimulating and extremely engaging. Nature offers up many gifts to those who sit and study her. Whether you are just beginning your journey as an outdoor painter, or just looking to increase your skill set, this workshop will do both.
Oils are recommended for this course, but pastellists and acrylicists are also welcome. Gaye will be working in oils.
$375 course fee
$255 accommodation (in log chalets) and meals (fresh homemade and organic)

PAINTING THE LIGHT
Location: Sorrento, BC
Dates: March 22-25
Contact: Gaye Adams – email@example.com
Cost: $475 (includes model fee)
This four day workshop will work with painting light in a number of different applications; painting light from the still life, the model, and lastly, rendering convincing light from your own photo references, a skill which modern day artists require, but that requires a knowledge of painting the light from life first.
Creating the optical illusion of strong light in a painting takes a solid observation of tonal and temperature relationships - a skill best learned by working from life, and letting that experience inform paintings rendered from photo references.
