Color Mixing – it Ain’t Rocket Science
Date: June 8 – 10 (three days)
Location: Sorrento, BC (at my studio)
Cost: $325
Medium: oil or acrylic (oil will be easier for these exercises)
Class size: ten or less
There is an air of mystery and intrigue that has long surrounded the art of color mixing. It is my intention to help put and end to that. First we have to see accurately, then mix it accurately. Temperature, color, tonality and intensity all need to be considered; and it’s not as tough as you would think to get it sorted out.
In this three day workshop, students will work from life in a series of exercises aimed at sorting out the confusion, based on coming to understand a few basic principles, and will learn how to accurately see and mix the colors before them. This will be fun! Email me with any questions.
PAINTING IN DESOLATION SOUND

May 27-31, 2012
Come join me for three days of painting aboard the Columbia III out of Campbell River, BC. This will be a plein air painting trip, where students will be encouraged to work in the medium of their own choice. I will be working in oils as I find it to be a wonderful plein air medium, but students are welcome to work in the medium in which they are most comfortable. All skill levels are welcome, although some experience is recommended. Students will be encouraged to work in their own style, with demos and coaching available as needed or requested.
The Columbia III is a beautiful boat; go to the website below and take a look for yourself. Come join me for a wonderful adventure exploring the pristine channels and inlets of Desolation Sound.

Come Paint In Spain With Me!
Come spend ten days in the rolling countryside of Andalucia, Spain. I will be taking no more than seven students to southern Spain at the end of April, 2012. We will be painting outdoors in the gentle warmth of Southern Spain in the springtime, poppies will be blooming!
April 26 – May 6, 2012
You’ll Paint… and be Pampered
Accommodation will be in a heritage building called El Molino. This old mill has been refurbished into an incredible accommodation nestled in the Spanish countryside – completely exclusive and private, with private and shaded outdoor courtyards for dining and painting. We will enjoy authentic Spanish cuisine made in house by our own chef, Mike Powell. He and his wife Hillary will be our hosts. They have been hosting workshops at El Molino for a number of years now, and make the experience second to none.
All travel arrangements and booking are made through Cindy Horton. You can email her at cindy@trvlconcepts.com. Trip price will include excursions to Cordoba, Ronda, and Priego in our private coach.
In addition, while my small group is at El Molino, my fellow instructor Nancy O’Toole will be teaching as well. Between the two of us, we will have no more than 14 students. Her classes are held at the same time, so students will be able to take advantage of her instruction as well if they wish to do so. Nancy is an amazing painter and teacher, working in both acrylics and watercolor.
It looks to be an incredible experience – I can hardly wait!
Limited Registration – Only Seven Participants

Painting the Coastal Landscape
May 27-31, 2012
Come join me and the crew of the Columbia III for three incredible days of painting some of the most beautiful and remote coastal locations along the BC coast. The hospitality, scenery and accommodation will be top shelf. With a maximum of seven students aboard, participants will have whatever amount of input and coaching the desire or require.
I encourage participants to work in their medium of choice, as the focus will be more on general painting principles than specific techniques related to a particular medium. I will be working in oils, my favorite plain air medium, but pastelists, watercolorists, and acrylicists are welcome.
Coaching will be geared to the experience level and personal style of each artist. I will be coaching students in the process of finding strong design elements with the landscape, and rendering a convincing and compelling painting on location in a timely fashion. Learning to simplify the landscape, distilling it down to the essentials necessary to establish a strong painting is the key to successful field studies.
Daily demos and lively discussions around all things art related will punctuate each glorious day about the Columbia III.
